SpinTunes #4 Champion: Steve Durand

Runner Up: Edric Haleen
3rd: Jess Scherer
4th: David DeLuc

Congratulations Steve! You survived all 4 rounds, and you are now a SpinTunes Champion. I wish I had a big fancy prize to give you, but in SpinTunes it's the musicians who provide the prizes. You've done more than your share with your 4 entries. We've given out free t-shirts to past champions (OOOOOoooo fancy), but you'll be getting a little something different (if your heart is set on the t-shirt just let me know). I'll e-mail you the details.

It was great having you involved with the contest, and I hope to see you in SpinTunes #5 as a judge or competitor. (expect an e-mail in May about judging)

ALL the finalists did a great job. You all earned your way into the finals, and I could have been happy with any of you being the SpinTunes #4 champion.

Thank You
Not only to the finalists, but to everyone that signed up or participated in SpinTunes. Judges, shadows, Tom for running the LP, Jules handling my poll, fans who listened & voted... I'll once again be sending out e-mails to everyone in a couple weeks. It'll be your chance to leave feedback with me that I can take into consideration when planning SpinTunes #5.

I'll be updating the "SpinTunes Hall Of Fame & Records" page sometime this week. In case anyone is interested in knowing more about how the stats have changed from 1 contest to the next.

The next contest will probably start around June. Make sure you follow the @SpinTunes feed for contest updates. Between Song Fight, Nur Ein & various other projects, there should be plenty to keep you busy until SpinTunes #5. Keep an eye on my Spintown blog, because I normally post about those type of things there.

  1. YAY!!!!

Congrats, Steve! You continue to turn out quality music round after round -- I'm thrilled you took top honors in SpinTunes #4!

Congrats to Jess and David! It was an honor competing with you in the Final Round. Everyone submitted strong songs -- I was thrilled with how all the finalists did. (And "YAY!" for me, too, for finally breaking into a fourth round of one of these songwriting things -- although I kind of destroyed a perfectly good running joke in the process...)

Thanks to Travis, for everything. Thanks, also to Dave and Tom, for pulling more of the weight this time around. Thanks to all the judges, for all their work and sharing and diligence.

And finally -- last and most -- thanks and congratulations to ALL of the competitors. Those who survived to the end, those who got knocked out along the way -- those who lost their "official" status but kept shadowing and bringing more music and songs to the table. I've been doing these things since August of 2008, when I first signed up for Masters of Song Fu #2. The whole time -- through 26 submitted songs -- I've never forgotten or lost sight of the fact that these things are ultimately about the music. I've watched people grow as artists. I've watched people grow as musicians. I've watched them grow as songwriters and producers. I've added a bunch of great music, not only to my own little "discography," but also to my iTunes library. And I've met a lot of great people along the way -- and I'm honored to count them as my friends.

Keep it up! Congrats to all! And here's looking forward to SpinTunes #5!!!

    :-)

    Edric

  2. Thanks everyone, I am honored.

Great job by all of the contestants all of the way through. No matter where you ended up you are still far ahead of the 99+% of the population that doesn't even try.

Great job with the contest once again Travis. And much appreciation for all of the judges for their commitment and effort. I guess I'll be joining you next time.

  3. Way to go Steve! I'm ashamed to admit that I didn't get my vote in on time due to preparations for a change of residence. I listened to your song many times though and two things stood out. First, I thought your take on the challenge was great. Right from the start I was prepared for an entire round just filled up with human-created percussion, and that's pretty much exactly what we got (my own shadow was no exception). But yours made significant use of tuned "instruments", giving it something extra.

Secondly, and even more impressively, was the simplicity of your composition. I usually look for things that are "weird" musically. The ultimate goal in theory (pun intended) being a strange key change or muddied up chord with a sharp 11 or something passing unnoticed, as if the weirdness is just "normal" music. Your song is subdued, straightforward, has a plain meaning that we can all relate to, and the simple chords and melody fit it perfectly. The music was appropriate to the emotion, and they played off each other extremely well. It was just right.

Again, congratulations Steve. You did a great job through the entire contest.

  5. I tried to post this yesterday, but it didn't go through...

Congrats Steve! This is my favorite song of yours, and one of my favorite songs that I have heard this contest. I have been singing it all week :) Such creative use of instrumentation, and it works great with your concept. If you wouldn't mind, I would Love to cover this song.

Thanks to all who put on the contest: Spin, Tom, and all the judges, thanks for your work!

To all the competitors, it has been a pleasure being in this music community with you. I really liked the supportive environment for music sharing. I think I may just do it again. ;)

    Peace!
