SpinTunes #8 Champion: Jenny Katz
Runner Up: Ryan M. Brewer
3rd: Jutze
4th: Edric Haleen
Congrats to Jenny, who is now our new #SpinTunes champion! I'm so glad I contacted Jenny a few years ago after finding her YouTube channel. Her music has been outstanding in SpinTunes, but it's been even more of a joy to get to know her a little. She's an asset to the community in more ways than 1.
As the current champion of SpinTunes, you have the option of judging SpinTunes #9. When I start preparing for the next contest, I'll e-mail you to find out if you plan on wielding the gavel or not.
The other finalist should hold their heads high. They faced 4 challenges, conquered them all, and created 4 new songs for the world to enjoy. Well done.

Thank You
Competitors, judges, guest judges, shadowers, fans, Tom for hosting the LP, Matt for the album art, and anyone that had anything to do with this contest. I just happen to be the guy that makes this shit up as I go, but none of it is possible without the participation of all you wonderful people.
The next contest will probably start in late June. Make sure you follow @SpinTunes on Twitter for contest updates. Between Song Fight, Nur Ein & various other projects, there should be plenty to keep you busy until SpinTunes #9. If you've completed at least 1 song for SpinTunes, you are also welcome to join the SpinTunes Facebook group. It's a good way to keep in touch, and we post about related news in there as well.

SpinTunes #8 Round 4 Review: Justin Nault
A good while back I was surfing through YouTube & found Justin's channel. I was really impressed with his work, poked around his website, and listened to a number of his songs until I decided...yeah...this guy rocks. So when it came time to look for guest judges for SpinTunes 8...well I thought of him. Thankfully he was nice enough to volunteer his time & efforts, and I definitely appreciate it. I'll embed one of his videos below so you can see who is reviewing you. I'll also post some of his links below...they're worth a click. - Spin

When a challenge is specifically asking for a song about pain, the number one thing I am looking for is mood. Does the mood of the song make you feel what the writer was feeling? That being said, this is an interesting challenge because of the emphasis on PHYSICAL pain. Physical pain could cover a broad spectrum of things, from actual physical pain, such as trauma to the body, or emotional pain, which can have intense physical consequences. Going into this challenge as a judge, I honestly didn’t anticipate anyone writing about actual physical injuries, and although the word physical in emphasized, I really believe that anyone who wrote about emotional pain has met the challenge requirements. You’d be hard pressed to find a human being who doesn’t believe that emotional pain is intensely physical! The good old’ I-V-vi-IV "Don’t Stop Believing" chord progression brings an added challenge to this round, mostly because the progression has been used so extensively throughout music history. There’s that constant nagging feeling of, "wait, does this song sound like that OTHER song?!" In a situation like this, it’s best to get out of your own head. I mean, hey, that’s why you can’t copyright chord progressions, am I right?! Even with the overuse of this progression, I was pleasantly surprised with the unique ways the writers incorporated I-V-vi-IV into their choruses.
All in all, I’d say these are some talented writers who have crafted some very pleasant songs (aside from the subject matter) and they should be proud of the art they have created! Keep up the good work, writers!!
1. Jenny Klatz – Clear
This is my favorite of the songs in this round. As I stated in my introduction, I was looking for writers to set the mood. Jenny has done that with "Clear." Of all of the songs in this round, this is the only one I could picture playing in the background of a dramatic movie scene, setting the mood and helping the viewer feel what’s happening. With the help of a strong melody and some properly placed backup vocals, the whole song has a haunting quality that stays with you even after the track has ended. Great job, Jenny!
2. Ryan M. Brewer - Christ Speaks
Interesting concept, lyrically, and a catchy hook to go along with it! The understated melody in the verses really let’s the melody in the hook sore and command attention from the listener. I really enjoyed the interesting use of the I-V-vi-IV progression in the hook; the small break before landing on the IV chord was great. Of all the songs in this round, this was definitely my favorite use of the required progression.
3. Jutze – The Bleeding Dragon
Very… unique. I’d say the instrumentation, tempo, and chord progression of this tune would be a bit better suited for a song with different lyrical content. It’s such a fun, happy sounding tune that the subject matter seems to come out of nowhere, without warning. Now, that doesn’t mean it’s not a good song, I think the music is just great! It’s a track that makes you want to grab a pint and dance! Which is what leaves me confused as to how to critique the song, other than saying that the music doesn’t match the lyrics. My expectations for this challenge were songs that set a mood, and the mood of this track is extremely happy, with lyrics about pain and suffering, which is an odd combination. The listener can’t relate to the pain of the villagers in the song, because they can’t feel it. It sounds as if the town was having a party! Again, great job with the music, the song is enjoyable to listen to.
4. Edric Haleen featuring Heather Zink – I Wanna Go Dancing
This track definitely has some "girl power" qualities to it! The lyrical content describes the cause of pain in greater detail than most of the other songs. The chorus is a lot of fun, with almost a Broadway feel to it. It’s a chorus that I could picture in a musical! The bridge was great as well, maybe my favorite part of the tune. With such a strong chorus and bridge, my only critique would be the repetitive melody in the verses, along with the length of the verses. I found myself getting anxious in the first verse, wanting the chorus to come sooner, and anxious again in the second verse, wanting the chorus to come back sooner. Maybe give the song more contrast, in the form of a strong pre-chorus, leading into the chorus. One good tool to help you separate the pre-chorus from the verse and chorus is to land on a chord we haven’t heard in the verse, such as a ii or iii chord. Still, the strong chorus and bridge make this a solid tune!
SpinTunes #8 Round 4 Review: Joe "Covenant" Lamb
Well, it’s been something of a ride hasn’t it!?
Typically, this is the least time I have had to listen to anything, so I’ll get right on with this review before Travis eats my face....
The Challenge...
Was it met? On the *Pain* aspect... yeah I would day so.
Certainly more clear cut than the *misleading theme* ! ;’ )
Technically, was it met? I have no idea.
Moving on....
If I were placing:
Jenny: Best song of the round. Not by a MASSIVE lot, but enough to make it an easy first place (for me).
Caught the theme well, and a deep and poignant song. Chorus is gorgeous.
sigh.. this bit was REALLY HARD though...
So.. by the smallest of fractions
Edric, Ryan, Jutze.....
Listing them all together, but in the order of “minute” preference.
ALL of these songs were well sung, recorded, performed, written...
They just didn't make it next to Jenny’s. In a small sense I am kinda glad, because it would have been ridiculously hard to separate a winner form these three if Jenny had not been in the mix.
A mix of musical pop (Edric), soaring pathos, (Ryan), and out and out fun (Jutze) I can’t say enough how much the final has brought out the absolute best in all of the contestants...
Superb stuff all....
SpinTunes #8 Round 4 Reviews: Paul Potts
So, the process is a little different for this round: the finalists are ranked by popular vote and the vote of previous contestants. So I'm off the hook, a bit, for trying to decide which song of the final four is the best. I still need to write reviews, and I will rank the four. There are also twelve shadows this round, including five by the Boffo Yux Dudes. Wow.
The challenge this time was interesting: the contestants were required to use a simple I-V-vi-IV chord progression, and to write about physical pain.
Just a quick note of thanks before the reviews. This was a very enjoyable SpinTunes for me. I've been very impressed by the way every contest seems to result in better and better work. Good job, everyone! I hope I can be involved in the next one too, in some capacity. It's just too much fun not to be part of it.
1. Jenny Katz, Clear
Very few songs ever submitted to any round of SpinTunes or the old Song Fu contests have had the ability to make me sob like a little baby. Jenny Katz can do it. These lyrics are gorgeous and moving. They could apply to a wounded soldier, a loved one dying of cancer, or various other scenarios, and so have a universal feel. Lines like "traitor hope has left us wary" make me shiver. A great vocal performance, and a beautiful doubled guitar part. Just beautiful.
2. Edric Haleen, I Wanna Go Dancing
I could quibble about "physical pain" -- yeah, I know very well that emotional pain can cause physical pain; I've certainly been there, so I guess it's OK. But this is a really lovely synth-pop song. Edric really put on a very different style for this and I'm impressed. Heather's vocal performance is sweet and light, although, I hate to say it, just a little pitchy on some of the verses (this may be partly because I'm just so used to hearing auto-tuned vocals on pop tracks). The instrument sounds are a little canned, but not bad. There are some original but very poppish and fun rhymes, like "I wanna go dancing / I wanna get lost in the noise / Be surrounded by boys / Who aren’t anything like you." Nicely done.
3. Ryan M. Brewer, Christ Speaks
This is impeccably produced but I find myself with some reservations about the way it toys with the subject matter. Can you use the crucifixion as a metaphor for being the one in the relationship that took the brunt of the pain when it ended? Well, of course you can, but I have to ask myself, should you? It's a bold choice but I can't help but feel it's a little off-putting. There are some other ways to interpret it, like a literal Jesus who is talking to his actual lover as he goes to his death, but that's even more provocative and also a little off-putting. So, nicely done, but this lyric just doesn't quite work well for me. I'm not offended per se; I'm a big fan of The Last Temptation of Christ, but I just feel like I can't quite click with the song. If it's going to take on such a provocative idea, it seems like it should take it a little more seriously.
4. Jutze, The Bleeding Dragon
Oh, cool! Wow! Nice music -- yet another different musical style by the incredibly versatile Jutze... wait... what is this song about? Wow, that's dark... happy but sad... wait... what? WHAT? Jutze! WTF! LOL! hahaha ewwww gross hahaha wow...
Shadows -- as time and inspiration allows, I will add brief comments on the shadows.
Glen Raphael, Hangnail (Shadow)
A piece of effective, but completely deadpan humor. Aside from a little looseness in the backing vocals and the guitars towards the end, it is really quite musically lovely, too.
Dr. Lindyke, Relief (Shadow)
The vinyl record sound effects and tinny recording are interesting -- is this supposed to sound like an early blues recording? I'm not quite sure what it is channeling. I like the vocal performance, though.
Caravan Ray, Pain (Shadow)
Not a bad tune, a bit like a live jam, but doesn't really stick with me.
Zoe Gray, Apologize (Shadow)
Musically this is very clever and enjoyable. The lyrics leave me a little confused. I don't think this is about physical pain? Maybe in the sense that Edric's song is about physical pain, but then it gets a bit graphic, which doesn't entirely make sense for me.
Jailhouse Payback, Back Pain (Shadow)
A fun jam. There's something going on with the lyrics but I think I may be too tired and spaced out to get it just now.
Red Watcher, Change (Shadow)
This is really beautiful, musically. The lyrics seem like they are more about the metaphorical pain of change than physical pain.
Boffo Yux Dudes, Is there a Doctor in the House? (Shadow)
Took me a moment to get what this one was about. Very clever. I suppose regeneration does involve physical pain! I like the way it borrows just a couple of notes from the Doctor Who theme music, and a vintage synthesizer waveform.
Boffo Yux Dudes, I'm in Love with the Pain that you Give (Shadow)
This sounds like a Tom Lehrer song. Is Dave singing with the Dudes?
Boffo Yux Dudes, Pain (Shadow)
Erm. Not their finest work. The music is nice.
Boffo Yux Dudes with TC Elliot, Put the Hammer Down (Shadow)
Musically, a very enjoyable song. The joke in the lyrics is just a bit one-note though.
Boffo Yux Dudes, Window Pain (Shadow)
Sounds very nice. I'm going to call this one "WHEN HOMONYMS ATTACK!" Too long.
Dr. Lindyke, Gotta Pee (Parody) (Shadow)
Very nice... I was laughing so hard I almost... well, you get the idea.

SpinTunes #8 Round 4 Reviews: Daniel Calwell
Ryan M. Brewer - Christ Speaks
Jenny Katz - Clear
Edric Haleen - I Wanna Go Dancing
Jutze - The Bleeding Dragon
I didn’t think you could do better than your song from the last round. I was wrong. This was great. I absolutely love your voice, and the power behind it. You are an artist. Great job.
Jenny Katz - Clear
This is my favorite song of yours. I really, really, really enjoyed it. I wish I had more constructive things to say, but I really couldn’t come up with anything. It was just incredibly well done.
Edric Haleen - I Wanna Go Dancing
Another great song, Edric. The lyrics and the mood of the song were excellent. I really enjoyed Heather’s performance for the most part. However, I did feel as though the singing was a bit weak at some points. You nailed the theme, and the energy along with the lyrics made up for any issues. Nice work.
Jutze - The Bleeding Dragon
This was a very fun tune. It made me want to drink a flagon of mead and dance on a table. It took me a few listens to understand what was really going on in the song. Once I figured it out, I was a little grossed out, but also very entertained. Good work.
SpinTunes #8 Round 4 Review: David Ritter
Edric Haleen - I Wanna Go Dancing —— 4th Place
A different Edric this is. Hmmm? The song structure and melody is nice - I like. Where this falls short, unfortunately, is the mix. The vocals are placed in a really exposed place in the mix. There are a couple of intonation problems which surprised me, with this being the final round and all. I figured that the vocal take would be polished enough to see your reflection. Overall, the mix sounded thin to me.
This makes me sad because I’m a fan of Edric now. I’m not sure why things were different. If you feel like letting me know Edric, I am curious. I’m not trying to be mean in any way - please know that. Like I said - I’m a fan now.
Jenny Katz - Clear ——— 1st Place
Absolutely lovely guitar. The tone, the playing, the everything. Wow. Your voice comes in…. beautiful singing. Excellent. I’ll admit I’ve been having some hormone problems lately but - this makes me feel the pain… Your song makes me feel like crying (the good crying of course). Your vocal tone is like crystal. Those harmonies - Right on. Wow. You totally blew me away with this song.
Jutze - The Bleeding Dragon —— 3rd Place
I have a soft spot for the Irish Whistle. Now… what you did with your vocal doubling and… what is that… That is working for you BIG TIME. If you don’t mind - let me know what you did there. It is really working for you. I love this song. Happy happy happy song…. with the pain pain pain in the lyrics. I love how you did that. Great job Jutze. Great job.
Ryan M. Brewer - Christ Speaks —— 2nd Place
Another flawless, beautifully executed vocal performance Ryan. Nice xylophone! This song is very very nice. Your lyrics - very powerful. The acoustic tone on the guitars are superb. “It is finished” at the end - very nice. There are many fine things you have in this song. Your songwriting on this one was great. Great job Ryan.
SpinTunes #8 Round 4 Review: Katharina Bordet
1. Jenny Katz - Clear:
Beautiful song, stunning voice. Speaking for this round, a clear winner, though I enjoyed the other songs a lot as well.
2. Ryan M. Brewer - Christ Speaks: I thoroughly enjoyed this song, as I did most of Ryan's things. My bet would've been on him on this round, but Jenny pulled a golden rabbit out of the bag.
3. Edric Haleen - I Wanna Go Dancing: A really lovely song though I would have preferred if Edric would have sung it himself.
4. Jutze - The Bleeding Dragon: This wasn't easy, but I'll have to rank it last on the merit of voice alone, the three others were just stronger. I really like the idea with the dragon and it's a great song, there is no doubt for me why those four are in the finals.

Round 4 LP & Deadline News
For now you should know:
- There are 4 official entries on the album & 7 shadows. (unless more come in)
- I think I responded to all e-mails (eventually).
- The listening party will be hosted by Tom on U-stream tonight. It's at 8PM.
- There has been a new rule added to SpinTunes. Since I didn't post about it before this round, it will take affect starting in SpinTunes 9:
"Banned Individuals: If someone is banned from SpinTunes it means they are banned from competing, shadowing, judging, & all the social parts of SpinTunes I administrate. They are also not allowed to collaborate on songs. Anyone collaborating with a banned individual will be DQ'ed from the round & their song will not be played at the LP or put on the album."
- As a lot of you know, Bandcamp only allows 200 free downloads a month. Recently we went OVER that limit (which is cool), and it's at least the 2nd time that has happened. The more people that hear your work the better, but there are some down sides to hitting our limit. The first is I had to pay $20 to get 1,000 more free downloads. Not really a big deal. The second is that Bandcamp automatically sets ALL the albums to sell at $7, and ALL the individual songs to sell at $1 as soon as we hit our limit. That is a big deal.
When it happened I tweeted about it on Twitter & asked people NOT to download songs until I could fix it. It's not hard to fix, but it is a little time consuming. I have to click on each album, and then each individual song & then set them all back to free. We've got A LOT of songs in our library now...so it takes awhile.
It was getting pretty late when I was resetting the prices this last time, and I had to work the next morning. So I stopped after getting halfway done. With an extremely busy weekend I forgot about fixing the last half of the library. Thankfully someone noticed the issue & pointed it out to me. So I went back & finished resetting them all. I then checked the stats on the Bandcamp account to see if anyone purchased a song in this time frame. There was 1. The song "Mount Holly" by Austin Criswell was bought by someone. So I contacted Austin, and sent him the $1 via PayPal.
I have no desire to try to profit from the songs you guys produce, so I'd REALLY appreciate it if you guys let me know about these issues as soon as you see them. With all the songs in our library it's possible I could have missed 1. If you notice, just e-mail me & it'll be fixed. If anyone is ever curious about the stats on my account (downloads/purchases) they can also just ask me. If they want to see the stats for themselves for some reason, I can organize a G+ chat & make that happen. I know Tom has access to the Bandcamp page as well, and maybe even Dave. I'm definitely not looking to keep people in the dark about stuff like that & want to be open as possible...within reason. (don't ask me every single week how many times your song was played. :p )

SpinTunes #8: Round 4 Challenge
Painful Progression - Write a song about PHYSICAL pain, and do so using a I-V-vi-IV chord progression in the chorus. (2 minute minimum) (your submission is due Sunday, March 23rd 11:59PM)
No substitutions & variations of chord progression should be used. (In reference to the wiki link)
Progression Examples:
Submitting Entries:- Entries must be received by the given deadline. Otherwise it'll be posted as a shadow. Received means that it has to appear in my e-mail inbox by the given deadline. I will be going by the time stamp on the e-mail in my inbox. PLEASE do not wait until the last hour to send me something. If there is a blackout in your area, your computer crashes, or your dog actually eats your thumb drive...I will not care. You are allowed to send in a draft of your song early just in case something horrible happens & you miss the deadline. Then you can add polish to your song & send in a better version closer to the deadline. 1 minute late is still late, people.
- Send your file in a format that Bandcamp accepts. (.aiff, .wav or .flac) (at least 16-bit/44.1kHz) You can find the specific requirements for Bandcamp files HERE.
- Name your file the song's title, but without spaces & punctuation.
- Title of the e-mail should be the title of the Challenge & your band's name.
- Include the song lyrics in the body of the e-mail. (If your song doesn't have lyrics...consider yourself eliminated. Instrumentals can be pretty, but SpinTunes does require lyrics.)
- Include information on anyone that needs credited if you collabed with someone.
- If you have a BandCamp account, you can just send me a link to your song on BandCamp if you include all the info I mentioned above. Make sure you have it set as a free download, and have it set so that I don't have to put in an e-mail to download it if you pick this option. THIS IS THE BEST FILE SHARING OPTION!
- Other file sharing options if you need them: Sound Cloud & Drop Box. Please send an e-mail as I already stated, but with the download link if you need one of these services. Please follow directions so your file doesn't wind up in my spam or trash folder accidentally.
Side Notes:
- Remember that you are allowed to send in a little background about your song. Some people don't like to do that, and you don't have to, but if you want to write a couple sentences about your song I'll post it on the BandCamp page for people to see. Some judges will look at the lyrics & this extra info, but they aren't required to.
- If you didn't sign-up in time to compete in SpinTunes #8, you can still complete the challenge & send in a song. It'll be uploaded with the other entries as a "Shadow Song". Check the FAQ if you don't know what that means. You can even complete past challenges from previous contests.
- The only other way to get your music played at the LP is to cover "Today's The Day" by Inverse T. Clown.
- Feel free to leave any questions in the comments.

You can listen to all the wonderful songs from this round by checking out the free album HERE. For once there were no ties. But it was still really tight around that cut off mark. Congrats to the 4 individuals going into the finals. And congrats to everyone for contributing to one of the strongest albums you've created thus far. No shame in having your name in bold, especially this round, but if it is...you've been eliminated from the competition.
Feel free to check for mistakes in my math...as always.

SpinTunes #8 Round 3 Review: David Ritter
Hi everyone. It’s me. Ok. Maybe this challenge was somewhat difficult for you this round. I get it. It’s hard to write under pressure. You’ve made it through some rounds and you’re getting weary.
Let me help you - Now is the time for all great men and women of SpinTunes to come to the aid of the musically depressed, the ones who just need inspiration in an already uninspired world, the ones who listen to make their brain pump out more feel good chemicals, the ones who look up to you, and finally - those who aspire to do what you do.
I know you can do it.
Ryan M. Brewer - Jesus Christ’s Biographer Gives a Guest Lecture
Man your vocals are super-powered. The guitars are tight. I love rhythmic chords at the end of those phrases - yes, you know which ones I mean. — 5
Felix Frost- Cloudy
I found that my head was bobbing during this one. I wasn’t sure about the instruments at first but it grew on me. Nice ending. —4.7
Jutze - Banjo (Rejected Wikipedia Edit)
Hypnotic voice. Hypnotic. Hypnotic. Hypnotic. Yee Haw! Hypnotic. Hypnotic. Hypnotic. Hypnotic. Hypnotic. Hypnotic. — 4.6
Edric Haleen - A Brave New World
Edric, You are a living musical. —4.6
Ross Durand - How to Write a Hit Song
I wrote a big long thing about being confused about the intonation problems. Then I deleted it because I realized it was all on purpose. Genius. —4.5
Jenny Katz - Liars Cheats And Weasels
LOL. Well done with slipping everyone in the contest. —4.5
Zoe Gray - The Truth About Homeschooling
I’m writing this review in pajamas. Coincidence? No. Why? …Because I wasn’t homeschooled. Cute little song. —4.2
Governing Dynamics featuring @suspicousden - Because
Tom Cruise loves this song long time. Nice spacey vibe accomplished. —4.1
Jailhouse Payback - Maritime Archaeology
Copious. —4
Dr. Lindyke - A Historical Account Of The Life And Accomplishments Of Abraham Lincoln Of Which Every Word is True I Swear.
I loved the intro. Rhythm Guitar is out of tune :-( —4.0
Adam Sakellarides - Why the Sky is Blue —3.9
The bad news:
I don’t hear any Bass guitar in this…. is it in there? Mix-wise: It sounds pretty thin. Adding another guitar in the mix and then left and right panning would help. Maybe stick a hint of synth in there to fill it out. Your vocals are pitchy and the harmonies are as well. Some of the words could maybe use some tweaking to feel less forced to fit in there…. that’s a difficult thing to do.
The good news:
It’s a catchy little tune. Your melody is nice and the vibe of the instruments along with the timbre of your vocals go along very well. Keep improving- you are getting there.

Hands down the best song out of the bunch.
SpinTunes #8 Round 3 Reviews: Paul Potts
So, onward. The number of tracks is going down and so the pressure on the judges is going up! I've been listening to the album this week and procrastinating about actually ranking the songs because it is tooth-grindingly stressful to me -- the quality of these songs is really quite high all around, and I hate to have to think that I will be helping make someone go home sad. But I signed up, so there's nothing to do for it except call 'em like I hear 'em to the best of my ability. So... in order from best-rated on down:
1. Ryan Brewer, Jesus Christ's Biographer Gives A Guest Lecture
Ryan gets my vote for best song of the round. It stands out from the pack here for several reasons: the lyric is sophisticated, funny, subtle, and occasionally dark and chill-inducing; the vocal and musical performances are terrific; the mix and mastering job is beautiful. It has just a bit of the tone and mood of the song "One of Us" recorded by Joan Osborne. It's also almost five minutes long, but impressively, it doesn't drag at all, no portion of it feels too repetitive, and it ends at just the right moment.
2. Dr. Lindyke, A Historical Account Of The Life And Accomplishments Of Abraham Lincoln Of Which Every Word Is True I Swear
A rambling blues ballad by Dr. Lindyke? Yes, please! I think this is my favorite Dr. Lindyke song of all time. I love what Dave and Denise did with the vocal performance. The lyric is funny and a little dark, and can be taken as a serious comment on the tendency towards historical revisionism about the Civil War, with some great near-rhymes and striking turns of phrase. I wish I had been able to try recording a guitar track or two for this song! The main rhythm guitar part is a little repetitive and doesn't _quite_ have a convincing blues guitar tone. The mix feels just a bit rough, and it's just a touch long. Maybe taking out the "tar baby" lines and condensing the last three long verses into two might help.
3. Felix Frost, Cloudy
This is my favorite F. F. song to date. The band-in-a-box accompaniment sound goes really well with a more upbeat and bouncy vocal performance here, and the lyric is head-scratching and funny.
4. Edric Haleen, A Brave New World
Edric's piano-playing and singing really come together nicely on this one, and it's clearly a subject he's pretty impassioned about.
5. Jenny Katz, Liars Cheats And Weasels
This is really nicely done, and funny -- Jenny is being an equal-opportunity misinformer here, and the lyric brought a big smile to my face. I think there is a bit of a problem with a song like this that has such a _specific_ context: while it has hilarious relevance this week in this context, it's not actually going to be very meaningful to anyone after the fact. So I find myself dithering a little bit on whether I think it is really a good song because of that. But I'm reminded by what Peter Schickele says: if it sounds good, it is good.
6. Jailhouse Payback, Maritime Archaeology
The music is quite well-done, a gruesome story that sounds like it could have come out of a William Hope Hodsgon short story from a century ago. But the lyric never seems to really pop, with some weak rhymes and odd word choices, and it feels like the happy music isn't quite in alignment with the story.
7. Jutze, Banjo (Rejected Wikipedia Edit)
This track also brought a big smile to my face. I may have LOL'ed. I really appreciate the way that Jutze changes things up -- just last round, he had a death-metal growl on top of crunching electric guitars. The silly music actually gets really pretty in the last bit when he is singing over it. But overall the song just doesn't have much meat to it, so the replay value is a little thin.
8. Zoe Gray, The Truth About Homeschooling
I wish I had been homeschooled! Fortunately my kids are, at least partly. This is funny and mostly terrific. There are some lines that don't really jump, and the piano part is a bit rough here and there, and just doesn't feel like it has enough variation to it.
9. Governing Dynamics, Because
It sounds like a certain Travis has been watching the History Channel. This song is a little frustrating because the music is really nicely put-together, with quite a complex mix with a lot of stuff in it, but it seems to suffer a bit from an everything-including-the-kitchen-sink effect, and doesn't seem to really come together for me this round.
10. Adam Sakellarides, Why The Sky Is Blue
Good things about this song: I like the fast guitar rhythm part and the percussion; I like the blend of backing vocals. It's funny. But Adam's voice is a little pitchy and the song as a whole doesn't seem to land on a good hook.
11. Ross Durand, How To Write A Hit Song
I love hearing Ross rap. This is quite funny and very misinformative. His specimen chord progression and melody is definitely a counterexample of some sort. A bold effort but musically, the whole thing just doesn't work that well for me, and I can't really just take the whole thing ironically and still enjoy it that much. I can't believe I'm ranking Ross so low. Sorry, Ross.
Trader Jack, Free Your Credit.com (M. A. C. D.)
This is definitely a piece of misinformation! I found it quite hilarious. The music and mix is a little rough, but the idea really has potential... or something...
Menage a Tune, A Simple Set Of Rules
This is a "filk" song, something that would be sung at a con. I like the concept of writing a song based on a very funny scene in an old Star Trek episode. This needs some real editing to make it flow better, with more clearly delineated verses and choruses.

Dr. Lindyke - A Historical Account Of The Life And Accomplishments Of Abraham Lincoln Of Which Every Word Is True I Swear
Edric Haleen - A Brave New World
Felix Frost - Cloudy
Governing Dynamics (feat. @suspiciousden) - Because
Jailhouse Payback - Maritime Archaeology
Jenny Katz - Liars Cheats And Weasels
Ross Durand - How To Write A Hit Song
Ryan M. Brewer - Jesus Christ's Biographer Gives A Guest Lecture
Zoe Gray - The Truth About Homeschooling
The chorus of this song has been stuck in my head for like three days now, thanks a lot. This song was super catchy. I probably would have done better in school if every piece of information was presented to me in this fashion. Good work.
Dr. Lindyke - A Historical Account Of The Life And Accomplishments Of Abraham Lincoln Of Which Every Word Is True I Swear
I was actually just in an opera about Abraham Lincoln (which seems very silly to me when I type it out like this), so this was super appealing to me just from the title. I was not disappointed with the content of the song. I loved it. It was so soulful and serious, but made me laugh hysterically at the same time.
Edric Haleen - A Brave New World
This is a terrifying song because it could almost be reality. I got a very strong “The Book of Mormon” vibe, which is awesome. The melody is so simple, it kind of floats on the air. Well done.
Felix Frost - Cloudy
Your voice was great on this track. I actually loved just about everything about this song. Sorry I don’t have very much to say about it.
Governing Dynamics (feat. @suspiciousden) - Because
I don’t see how this is misleading - it was aliens. Just kidding (or am I?). This song kicked ass. I feel like it was the perfect length too. Very nice work.
Jailhouse Payback - Maritime Archaeology
I wasn’t a fan of this one at first, but it grew on me. I feel like it was a little repetitive at times, but you sound great and the lyrics are very cool.
Jenny Katz - Liars Cheats And Weasels
I can’t get over how amazing this was. I laughed for about 5 minutes after hearing it for the first time, and then immediately listened to it again. You sounded extraordinary on this track. The piano was so simple but so beautiful. Amazing work.
Jutze - Banjo (Rejected Wikipedia Edit)
I love the concept of this song, and how it’s set up. The speaking of the information as opposed to singing made it 10x better. Nice job.
Ross Durand - How To Write A Hit Song
I can’t say I was a fan of this song. For one, I don’t feel like it met the theme of the challenge. It wasn’t necessarily misleading nor particularly academic. I understand what your intentions were, I just don’t think they read as well as you hoped.
Ryan M. Brewer - Jesus Christ's Biographer Gives A Guest Lecture
Once again, I must tell you that you have an incredible voice. It’s extremely passionate and versatile. This song was nice, because it was the most sincere in its misleading-ness. Good job.
Zoe Gray - The Truth About Homeschooling
I know quite a few homeschoolers, and this song made me laugh because most of them are actually super socially awkward. However, I know a few who aren’t. Anyway, I really enjoyed this song. I just love the dynamic between your voice and the piano. Good job.
SpinTunes #8 Round 3 Review: Katharina Bordet
1. Edric Haleen - A Brave New World 02:58
Edric and Ryan seem to be two sides of the same coin this round, so it’s really hard for me to pick my favourite of the two. Both managed to get a message across and not just rely on random nonsense. At first, I wanted put Edric second because I felt lectured. Then I remembered that that was the other point of the challenge so he’d have to win it for me… That I really enjoy his music and singing is no secret anymore.
2. Ryan M. Brewer - Jesus Christ's Biographer Gives A Guest Lecture 04:43
Without listening to the lyrics it would be, again, a song I’d listen to. Not only did he take the challenge very well, he also managed to squeeze a message in. The only critique if any is that it ended up being a bit on the long side for so much message. But overall I enjoyed it a lot.
3. Dr. Lindyke - A Historical Account Of The Life And Accomplishments Of Abraham Lincoln Of Which Every Word Is True I Swear 05:35
I think that song might make it into one of Edric’s musicals, if only the 2CD live version and not the buffed up studio soundtrack version. I am thinking of that not-Disney Moses movie and it would work quite well. Good bit of singing again, the electric guitar brought out the exciting bit of the movie where the hero runs into battle and… anyway, very well done.
4. Jenny Katz - Liars Cheats And Weasels 03:16
Really well sung, quite fun and quirky. Enjoyed it a lot.
5. Jutze - Banjo (Rejected Wikipedia Edit) 02:09
Also quite nuts and well played - I really enjoyed the banjo solo in the middle.
6. Governing Dynamics featuring @suspiciousden - Because 04:11
That was quite a sweet song until it turned into Indiana Jones 4. But only in the lyrics. And I know that was the point so it’s not a negative. Also not sure if he’s trying to play the Theremin or stepped on a cat’s tail.
7. Adam Sakellarides - Why The Sky Is Blue 02:23
Another decent song that fit the challenge but left me a bit ‚meh‘. I cannot fault anything about the recording or singing only that it’s again not my cup of coffee.
8. Ross Durand - How To Write A Hit Song 02:55
This song was a bit all over the place. It was like he was trying to prove his point with his awkward how-(not)-tos by actually doing these things. It didn’t really work out well for me.
9. Jailhouse Payback - Maritime Archaeology 03:07
I have a hard time pinpointing what bothered me about the song. It felt a bit repetitive which might have been due to the melody and rhythm as well as the very straight rhymes. Somehow left me a bit not caring, even though I know that’s not an explanation other than taste.
10. Zoe Gray - The Truth About Homeschooling 02:46
I guess if I knew more about homeschooling I might get the message, but since it’s really unknown here, I didn’t. The recording of the singing was pitchy (again?) so I was having a bit of a hard time listening to it.
11. Felix Frost - Cloudy 04:01
I am sure all the information is wrong in there because it is really just thrown together words and phrases. The music sounds like from a computer game I’m too young to have played. Even though I know these are all subjective things, I really didn’t like the song.
I am refraining from judging the shadows cause one makes me want to break my headphones and the other sounds as if they were already broken.

SpinTunes #8 Round 3 Review: Joe "Covenant" Lamb
DAMN you people!
This one is HARD!!!
Okay - for the first time ever I have had to listen to the songs twice.
Because I simply could NOT find my top four without a second run.
You guys are, for the most part, separated by decimal pointage
So... here we go... best first:
(Jebus... am I gonna need a THIRD listen through??)
Okay...
1) Ryan M Brewer: Superb. A great song, very well sung, amazing imagery. And right up until the end had me thinking... "where's the misinformation?" when the realisation falls on you. Best line? Right close to the end"....WATCHING kids in a candy store..." very poignant.
2) Ross Durrand: Okay.... I am STRETCHING the definition of 'misleading’ here because frankly, I don't think this song IS misleading. It is played deliberately badly (or IS it!?) and sung similarly.. but that adds to its charm, however, irony is not misleading. Everything Ross says during this song is true. how it is performed is irrelevant to the definition of misleading... BUT I then thought... maybe it is the MUSIC that is misleading!? Has Ross, in an Haleen-Like twist redefined the definition?? Does the challenge say the LYRIC must be misleading?? (Nope) SO it is the MUSIC that is mis-leading! It doesn’t SOUND like the singer knows what he is talking about because it *sounds* weird and NOT hit-like at all... (But then - it IS because it is a great song.. so IS it misleading... AAAUUGHHH!!!!!!!) (And then, is the fact that I am tying myself in knots mean ‘I’ am being misled??!! BY MYSELF!?) Brilliant song... Rappy-Rap-Rap. "KAZOO SOLO!" (Stealing my schtick!)
Okay, it gets even harder here.... JUST edging into third...
3) Edric Haleen: Tom Lehrer lives. Witty, clever, biting, pithy, acid. Is this misleading? Not if you are a fundie! Just as well I am not! Musically it's a bit predictable thanks to the style, but the use of dischordants right alongside the classic music-hall riffs is bliss. Best line? The LAST line... so very cleverly done!
Man... there are about 5 tracks SO close together here... in the end I have to give it to:
4) Jutze: I loved this track. SO damned catchy, beautifully presented, the germanic professor sound was great - and the total LACK of Banjo sealed this for me. Love it. Best Line? "Scottish invention due to lack of strings"
OKay.. the rest of you guys.... the tiniest fractions separated:
5) Jenny Katz: Way cool song - bit of a problem with the misinformation as everything she sung was actually true. (And of course named me as first judge!) Minus points for calling Zoe Gray "nearly 53" - she turned 54 last year. Well played, excellently sung, great presentation. Just pipped by the above.
6) Governing Dynamics: Superb. Slowly peels away the layers to reach the 'misleading' part and then runs with it... (Too stupid caveman had me laughing aloud!) Clever lyric, dry humour and a stand-out chorus "It was aaaaalllleeeeYINS" ("YyyyyyEP!)
7) Zoe Gray: Our resident Time Lord drops by with a nice quirky number- a bit too niche for me as homeschooling isn't too well known in the UK. Maybe everything she is singing is true? I dunno!? Played and sung well, clever and jaunty. Just edged out more on techinical grounds. Best line? "No-one... EVER!"
8) Felix Frost: Another great song, very very good musically. Tip of the hat to they might be giants, but too much like them for me to hear anything but them. To me, tripped itself up trying to be 'too' lyrically gettingmanywordsintoasingleline sometimes. Great Line "Every mitochondria...."
9) Dr Lyndike: Too long or too slow. I get what this was trying to be, but it was hard going to listen to for it to get there. LOVE the idea of Lincoln and Moses being mixed up, but I felt half of this could easily have been left out and the rest tightened up. Musically ambitious, some nice instrumentation (and Backing Vocals! W.M.M. )and perfectly presented bluesy number... but the kind of bluesy number that I don't switch on to, sadly. Best line "Fuelled by Lincoln's ire..."
10) Jailhouse Payback: I do have a problem with this one. It's not really academically presented, and I don’t think it is misleading. The characters IN the song are *misled* but that’s not the same thing... If this is not DQ'd - 8th place for me. A solid song, just didn't have the hook of the others. felt a little pedestrian,, but also had overtones of Big Country which helped it up a bit. Couldn't pick out a favourite line in this- which kinda fits the overall feel of the song. (Sorry)
11) Adam Sakellarides: Fun, bouncy, but a little clunky lyrically. Nothing whatsoever wrong with this song, but it's tiny tiny things that have separated the 'bottom' seven, and a clunky lyric is enough to but this track here... (which is sad, cos a song that references “Alice...” should be top of my lists!)
Wow... guys and gals - this has been so difficult.
I always feel I need to distance myself from the previous rounds (and previous competitions) etc etc for all artists, and NOT make any judgments based on progression from previous rounds, or differences in style/content etc.... And it was hard not to comment on those things for this round because EVERYONE was so close to having a place in the top four... On a personal level - I think everyone brought great stuff to the table... to those who miss out this round - it will suck hugely because SOMEONE has to go out... I'm sorry it was you.
Shadows:
1) Trader Jack - Too difficult to listen to because of the PTS PTS PTS going on all the way through it. Which is a shame because it sounded quite interesting otherwise.
2) Jo - Don't do a-capella. It is ruining any crack at a song you are doing this with. But this one was too out there to hold my attention. I totally get you are looking to be quirky and adventuristic with the song, but your voice just doesn’t portray it well enough. If you could multi-track, your vocals, or even pick from several takes, it ‘might’ make a HUGE difference... but- solo voice, "live", isn't working for you. I'm sorry m'dear. :-(

SpinTunes #8 Round 3 Songs

I will be going by the time stamp on the e-mail in my inbox. PLEASE do not wait until the last hour to send me something. If there is a blackout in your area, your computer crashes, or your dog actually eats your thumb drive...I will not care. You are allowed to send in a draft of your song early just in case something horrible happens & you miss the deadline. Then you can add polish to your song & send in a better version closer to the deadline. 1 minute late is still late, people.

You can listen to all the wonderful songs from this round by checking out the free album HERE. The 5 names in bold have been eliminated from the competition, but I hope we have 5 new people shadowing the next round. There were a number of ties again. The popular vote was enough to decide most of them, and it actually helped decide the fate of 3 people. For the ties that couldn't be settled by the popular vote (because that was also tied), I went to the scores from the previous round to break the tie.
2 people were DQ'ed by the judges. If you read the reviews it's obvious that it wasn't because the judges didn't like their songs. The majority of the judges just felt that the songs didn't meet the spirit of the challenge. A few others were considered for DQ, but squeaked by.
Feel free to check for mistakes in my math...as always.
