The songs are now available for FREE download, and you can vote for your favorite entries as well. Many of you will be asking friends and family to support you in the popular vote. That's great, but when you do, please ask them to listen to all the songs. You can only vote for 1 person this time around with the popular vote.
Until the new champion is announced you will only be allowed to download the round 4 album as a whole. BandCamp limits how many free downloads I can give away, and 1 album download counts the same as 1 song download.
Nobody was cut by the deadline, YOU (the competitors of SpinTunes 8) have to eliminate 3 people this round. Good luck everyone.

Well -- another SpinTunes is coming to a close. The songs have all been written, the votes have all been cast, and in 24 hours or so we’ll know who our newest “champion” will be.
ReplyDeleteIt’s a little sad for me, watching ST8 reach its end, ‘cause I know I’m not going to be a part of ST9. I’m getting married this summer, and the between the wedding and the honeymoon, I’m not going to have enough time to also do SpinTunes. (But don’t worry -- to even up the score of Brandi taking me away from all of you, I’m gonna make her sleep on the ground for a month!)
(That’s actually not a joke. But I’ll be sleeping on the ground, too. Camping. In the American West. And Brandi assures me she’s okay with this . . .)
It’s weird to think about “sitting out” for an iteration of SpinTunes. For those of you who don’t know -- I’ve been a part of this kind of thing for more than five and a half years, now. There used to be an awesome thing called Masters of Song Fu. (It’s the template on which SpinTunes would later be based.) I stumbled upon it through Jonathan Coulton while he was competing in the very first MoSF. When it started up again, I signed up for it and then proceeded to take part in MoSF #2, 3, 4, 5, and 6.
Then, when SpinTunes rose up to fill the void left by Song Fu’s demise, I was right there at the beginning. So now -- 13 Song Fu songs and 29 SpinTunes songs later, I have a real soft spot in my heart for both this contest and this community.
For one thing -- I have grown SO MUCH as a songwriter through my participation in MoSF and SpinTunes. I truly love how the wide diversity of challenges really forces you to push beyond that with which you’re most comfortable and stretch into new, previously unimagined places. And more than that -- in trying to push myself as a songwriter, I have learned SO MUCH about recording and about various music applications -- GarageBand, Finale, microphones, editing, sequencing, compression, effects. I’ve had the opportunity to do epic amounts of multi-tracking. I’ve had the opportunity to score for full orchestra. I’ve had the opportunity to figure out (how to approximate) guitars (both acoustic and electric) and drums. I’ve had the opportunity to write in a dizzying array of styles. AND -- I’ve had the opportunity to be surprised and delighted by the songs created by all the OTHER songwriters who are striving to meet the same challenges themselves.
Which leads to the other tremendous blessing of these songwriting competitions. The community of songwriters, musicians and onlookers that has grown up around us is supportive and encouraging and welcoming and helpful and collaborative. The friends I’ve made across the Internet through my involvement with these “competitions” are amazing and special and cherished, and it’s fun to watch them grow and stretch and create and share.
So I’m going to miss being a part of all that next summer. Don’t worry -- I’ll be back for STX. And I’ll listen to the songs whenever and wherever we can get reception on Brandi’s iPhone out there in the remote wilderness of the American West (if we don’t get eaten by a black bear first). But for right now -- thank you, thank you, thank you. Thank you to all the songwriters who make this experience what it is. Thank you to Travis for keeping it all up-and-running time after time after time. Thank you to the judges for taking the time and effort to give feedback and constructive critique to all of the artists round after round. Thank you to Tom for hosting the listening parties and helping get our music out there. And thank you to everyone who “tunes in” and listens to the songs and downloads the tracks and supports the artists.
So as we await the final notes of SpinTunes 8, let me say “good luck” to my fellow finalists. Let me say “congratulations” to everyone added their art to the world over the last couple of months. And let me assure you -- “I’ll see you all again in SpinTunes X”!
